Phnom penh:: On Monday, the National Assembly (NA) of Cambodia approved an amendment to the law on the election of Senate members. The approval took place during the 5th session of the NA's 7th legislature, held at the NA Palace under the chairmanship of President Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, with all 112 lawmakers present voting in favor of the proposed law.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the NA General Secretariat's press release stated that the amendment aims to strengthen the effectiveness of senators in fulfilling their representative roles. The amendment is designed to enhance accountability and bring senators closer to their electoral base and citizens at the grassroots level. This initiative seeks to improve communication with constituents, foster a better understanding of local concerns, and enable senators to perform their duties more effectively.
The proposed amendment comprises two articles and was reviewed by the NA's Commission on Legislation and Justice. The commission's findings were presented by H.E. Ang Vong Vathana, Chairman of the commission, while H.E. Dr. Thun Vathana, Second Vice President of the Senate, represented the signatory senators in defending the proposed law.
In addition to the amendment, lawmakers unanimously passed a draft law aimed at combating online scams. This draft law seeks to strengthen digital security and better protect citizens from technology-based fraud, addressing a concern that has increasingly become global.
During the same session, NA President Samdech Khuon Sudary announced the closure of the 5th session of the 7th legislature. In accordance with Article 83 of the Constitution and the Assembly's internal rules, each session must last at least three months. The fifth session, which began on November 28, 2025, exceeded this requirement.
