Indian Embassy Celebrates 80th Independence Day with Ceremonies and Cultural Showcase in Phnom Penh

Phnom penh: The Embassy of India in Phnom Penh marked India's 80th Independence Day with a vibrant celebration, featuring a ceremony at the Embassy on August 15 and a grand reception at Sofitel Phnom Penh on August 17, 2026.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the festivities on August 15 began with the singing of "Vande Mataram," India's National Song, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag by Ambassador Vanlalvawna Bawitlung. Attendees then joined in singing the National Anthem, and the Ambassador read the President of India's Address to the Nation.

The event included cultural performances, showcasing traditional dances, patriotic songs, and poetry recitals by the Indian diaspora and Embassy officials. Certificates of appreciation were awarded to winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz from Cambodia, and prizes were presented to participants of the Viksit Bharat Drawing Competition, held during the Bharat Utsav on August 9. Other competition winners were also honored.

On August 17, the reception at Sofitel Phnom Penh celebrated the 80th anniversary of India's independence. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, H.E. Prak Sokhonn, attended as the Chief Guest. The gathering included Ministers, senior officials of the Royal Government of Cambodia, Ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, and distinguished Indian community members.

Ambassador Bawitlung, in his address, emphasized India's progress since gaining independence in 1947, highlighting its economic growth, technological innovations, and societal inclusivity. He noted India as the world's fastest-growing major economy, driven by an entrepreneurial ecosystem and forward-looking reforms, positioning it as a global leader in technology and innovation.

The Ambassador spoke on India's achievements in IT, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, space, and fintech, aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 to transform India into a developed nation by its 100th independence anniversary. He also discussed the strengthening bilateral ties between India and Cambodia, emphasizing cooperation in information technology, health, agriculture, and education.

The reception featured a One District One Product (ODOP) exhibition, displaying India's traditional handicrafts and products. Guests enjoyed performances of Indian classical dance and yoga, offering insights into India's cultural heritage and the global appeal of yoga.
