UNESCO Supports Teacher and Education Staff Capacity Development

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and UNESCO have hosted a ceremony to handover and receive new ICT equipment to the ministry to further strengthen Teacher Education Programmes in Cambodia (STEPCam).

The event was presided over by H.E. Dr. Nath Bunroeun, the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and H.E. Sardar Umar Alam, UNESCO Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Cambodia.

According to the UNESCO, STEPCam sits as one of Cambodia’s largest and most comprehensive teacher education programme implemented since 2018, with support from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE).

Despite the COVID-19 threat, STEPCam has been developed to increase the capacity of Cambodia’s teachers, recognising that well-prepared and motivated teachers are the single most important factor at school level in ensuring quality learning for every child in Cambodia.

One key intervention under the programme focuses on strengthening competencies of Early Grade teachers in Khmer Literacy and Mathematics, it added.
