Presidential office calls for thorough probe into assault of ruling party lawmaker

The South Korean presidential office on Thursday called for a thorough investigation into the assault against ruling People Power Party lawmaker Rep. Bae Hyun-jin.

Bae sustained a head injury after being attacked by an assailant earlier in the day in Seoul but remains in stable condition, her office said.

“This incident should not have happened and a thorough investigation should be conducted,” the presidential office said in a statement issued in response to the incident.

A senior presidential official described the incident as a case of “shocking terror” and stressed that a thorough probe should be carried out.

Bae was transported to Soonchunhyang University Hospital with her head bleeding. She remained conscious and her injury is not believed to be life threatening.

The suspect was momentarily arrested by police in Gangnam, and claimed to officers that he is 15 years old.
