PERAK LATEST TO BE HIT BY FLOODS, EVACUEES IN KELANTAN, T’GANU NOW MORE THAN 6,400

KUALA LUMPUR, An evacuation centre was opened in Perak today after it was hit by floods again while the number of flood victims in Kelantan and Terengganu increased to 6,402. However, the flood situation in Selangor continued to improve.

In Teluk Intan, PERAK, the Dewan Serbaguna Padang Tembak flood relief centre (PPS) was opened at 6 pm to house 30 victims from seven families who were evacuated from Batu 9, Lorong Kedah and Lorong Belakang Klinik in Changkat Jong.

The Perak Civil Defence Force (APM) Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said no roads were cut off by floods.

In KELANTAN, the number of evacuees rose sharply to 3,780 people from 1,170 families as of 8 pm compared to 1,350 people from 368 families this afternoon.

According to the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal, the victims, from Kuala Krai, Tanah Merah and Pasir Mas, are taking shelter at 15 PPS in three districts.

In Tanah Merah, the victims are housed at the Balai Raya Padang Kijang, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kulim and Sekolah Menengah Ugama (A) Kajang PPS.

Only three PPS – at Pejabat Veterinar, SK Banggol Guchil and SK Chenulang – are still open in Kuala Krai compared to eight centres this morning.

Pasir Mas has the most number of victims and they are housed at SK Gual Tinggi, SK Sri Rantau Panjang (2), SK Gual To’Deh, SK Kampung Rahmat, SMK Baroh Pial, Masjid Mukim Padang Licin, SK Sri Kiambang and SMK (A) Lati.

In TERENGGANU, the number of victims at 36 PPS increased to 2,622 people from 637 families as of 8 pm.

According to the Terengganu Flood Management Committee Secretariat, Marang became the fifth district in the state to be hit, with 231 victims from 41 families being placed at four PPS.

Dungun is the worst-hit district with 1,615 victims from 399 families taking shelter at 14 PPS while in Hulu Terengganu, 282 evacuees from 64 families are housed at seven PPS.

In Kemaman district, 227 victims from 54 families were moved to three PPS while in Setiu, 267 people from 79 families are still sheltering at eight PPS.

According to the Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) Info Banjir website, Sungai Nerus and Sungai Marang are at the danger level while Sungai Setiu and Sungai Tumpat in Kemaman are at the alert level.

In SELANGOR, the number of flood victims dropped from 78 people from 26 families this morning to 49 people from 19 families at 9 pm. They are housed at the SK Jaya Setia and Balai Raya Parit Mahang PPS in Kuala Selangor.

The JPS Info Banjir portal said Sungai Rasau at Tugu Keris, Klang was at a danger level of 4.84 metres as of 8 pm.

Two rivers in Klang district recorded warning levels, with Sungai Binjai at Pekan Meru at 4.2 metres and Sungai Klang at Bandar Klang and Selat Muara at 2.77 metres and 2.96 metres respectively.

Two other rivers registering warning levels are Sungai Selangor at Rantau Panjang Kuala Selangor at 7.33 metres and Sungai Damansara at Batu 3 and Kampung Melayu Subang at Petaling with readings of 5.38 metres and 17.02 metres respectively.
