Online Passport Processing for Migrant Workers to Start Next Year

Starting in early 2024, Cambodian migrant workers in South Korea can access online processing of their passport extensions and renewals from the country.

The good news was shared on Dec. 18, by H.E. Kata Orn, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, on the occasion of the 24th International Migrants Day.

The Royal Government of Cambodia will also make available online requests for criminal records, he added.

With the guidance of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training will introduce the online platform, especially to save time and reduce travel costs for Cambodian migrant workers because they will not have to return to Cambodia just for their passport extension or renewal.

He added that the government is also exploring more options to facilitate the paper work, not only for the Cambodian migrant workers in South Korea but also in other countries.

As of August 2023, Cambodia has logged 1.3 million Cambodian overseas workers, including roughly 1.2 million in Thailand, 50,000 from South Korea, 20,000 in Malaysia, and 20,000 in Japan.

Those Cambodian workers send home more than US$2 billion annually.
