Siem reap: The MGC Asian Traditional Textiles Museum has launched a special three-month exhibition featuring recreated royal and royal consort costumes from five significant historical eras of Cambodia, providing visitors a glimpse into the evolution of traditional Khmer royal attire. According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the exhibition displays costumes from the Funan, Chenla, Angkor, Chaktomuk, and Longvek periods, including wedding attire inspired by the legendary tale of Preah Thong and Neang Neak. Mr. Sen Kimsun, Manager of the museum, explained that the costumes were meticulously recreated using sculptures from Cambodian temples and museums, as well as collections and historical references from international museums. The reproductions, developed through detailed research and careful craftsmanship over an extended period, allow visitors to experience the traditional attire primarily encountered through sculptures and other historical representations. Mr. Kimsun noted that the recreated costumes might d iffer slightly from the original sculptures due to variations in available references, images, and materials used in the reconstruction process. Running from August 19 until the end of November 2026, this exhibition marks the museum's inaugural temporary exhibition solely dedicated to the attire of kings and queens from these five major historical periods. The display has garnered interest from local visitors, including Teacher Som Sawat of Preah Enkosei Primary School, who visited with 37 students. She expressed fascination with the recreated costumes associated with Khmer royalty. An admirer of Khmer culture and traditions, Teacher Som Sawat praised the exhibition and urged both Cambodians and tourists visiting Siem Reap to include the museum and its unique costume display in their itineraries. The MGC Asian Traditional Textiles Museum has previously curated several temporary exhibitions featuring traditional Khmer clothing and silk textiles, showcasing collections preserved by families in various provinc es since before the war.
