Siem Reap:The co-chairs of the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Preah Vihear Temple (ICC-Preah Vihear) from China and India have pledged ongoing support and collaboration with Cambodia to restore the Preah Vihear Temple, following significant damage to the World Heritage site.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, this pledge was made during the 11th Technical Meeting of ICC-Preah Vihear, overseen by Cambodian Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, H.E. Dr. Phoeurng Sackona, and attended by experts in cultural heritage conservation.
Ms. Li Qiaozhi, the Chinese Co-Chair, expressed that the temple had suffered severe damage necessitating immediate conservation measures. She affirmed China's commitment to work alongside India and Cambodia to preserve the ancient site for future generations.
Mr. Vijay Shankar Prasad, the Indian Co-Chair, highlighted India's involvement since 2013 in restoring Khmer monuments, including parts of Preah Vihear Temple. He emphasized the importance of these efforts in maintaining the site's cultural identity and universal significance.
The damage to Preah Vihear Temple was a result of heavy-weapons attacks in 2025. An assessment by the ICC-Preah Vihear Ad-hoc expert team identified key areas requiring urgent protection, such as the installation of a drainage system to mitigate water damage and reinforcing structures in high-risk zones.
Following a UNESCO-ICOMOS mission in March 2026, which reported 562 damaged locations within the temple complex, UNESCO warned of the unprecedented scale of destruction, threatening the Outstanding Universal Value of the site. The agency noted that nearly all areas of the temple were affected.
