Poipet:The Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) has distributed emergency relief supplies to 1,412 households impacted by severe flash floods and strong winds in Poipet city, Banteay Meanchey province, aiming to alleviate their immediate hardships.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the distribution event was led by H.E. You Lana, Second Deputy Secretary-General of the CRC, on behalf of Samdech Kittiprittpundit Bun Rany Hun Sen, the President of the CRC. He was joined by H.E. Oum Reatrey, head of the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Red Cross Branch.
During the ceremony, H.E. You Lana extended greetings and condolences from Samdech Kittiprittpundit Bun Rany Hun Sen to the affected families, underscoring the CRC's commitment to supporting communities impacted by disasters. He stated that the aid aims to ease immediate financial and material burdens and demonstrate the CRC's ongoing dedication to assisting vulnerable citizens.
H.E. You Lana also advised residents to be vigilant regarding weather updates and adhere to instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety. He expressed appreciation for the rapid response and coordination by provincial and city officials, local armed forces, and Red Cross volunteers in evacuating residents and managing disaster relief efforts.
According to the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Committee for Disaster Management, the flooding led to the temporary evacuation of 2,434 families in the area. The agricultural sector experienced significant damage, with 18,026 hectares of rice fields affected, including 430 hectares fully destroyed, alongside damage to 98 hectares of cassava and three hectares of mixed crops.
Moreover, the floodwaters damaged 345 road sections, covering a total of 187.68 kilometers, causing major disruptions to local transportation, supply chains, and daily commutes. Local authorities and emergency management agencies continue with rescue and recovery operations to help communities return to normalcy.
