Germany and Cambodia Strengthen Collaborative Efforts on Sustainable Garment Sector

Phnom penh: Cambodia and Germany have embarked on the second phase of a technical cooperation project, intensifying efforts to enhance the sustainability of Cambodia's garment, footwear, and travel goods sector. This initiative comes as Western markets increasingly enforce stringent environmental and labor standards.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the project, named FABRIC Cambodia II, was officially launched during a ceremony at the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training. It was attended by representatives from Cambodia's labor and economy ministries and Germany's GIZ development agency. Minister H.E. Heng Sour and H.E. Christof Weigelmeier, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Phnom Penh, were present to formalize the agreement.

The second phase of the project emphasizes supply-chain transparency and compliance with international social and environmental standards. It aims to go beyond traditional factory audits by embedding sustainability through public-private policy dialogue and workforce training. H.E. Heng Sour highlighted the importance of this partnership, asserting that the garment sector is crucial to Cambodia's economy but must adapt to the EU and U.S.'s increasing emphasis on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria and human rights due diligence laws.

H.E. Weigelmeier pointed out that enhanced compliance will strengthen Cambodia's position in the global supply chain, especially as the country is set to graduate from its Least Developed Country status in 2027. This transition will remove certain trade preferences, making adherence to standards essential for maintaining competitiveness.

The project is aligned with Cambodia's Pentagonal Strategy and the GFT Development Roadmap 2022-2027, which prioritize decent work, productivity, and legal accountability. Beyond financial support, GIZ will provide technical expertise and policy guidance to assist Cambodia in navigating forthcoming EU and German supply-chain legislation. The Deputy Head of Mission expressed Germany's pride in extending its partnership with Cambodia to promote labor rights and environmental standards.
