Sofia: A courtesy meeting was held today between H.E. Dr. CHEA Chanboribo, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the Republic of Bulgaria, and H.E. Pavlin Todorov, Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Kingdom of Cambodia, at the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Sofia. The meeting took place on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Bulgaria, with both ambassadors expressing optimism for further advancements in bilateral cooperation during their tenures.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Ambassador CHEA Chanboribo proposed the establishment of a Cambodia-Bulgaria Chamber of Commerce to enhance economic collaboration. He highlighted Cambodia’s role as a gateway to ASEAN for Bulgaria, while underscoring Bulgaria’s potential as an entry point for Cambodian exports into the European Union. The ambassador also emphasised Cambodia’s robust economic growth, favourable tariff policies, and strong trade relations with the People’s Republic of China.
In the field of tourism, Ambassador CHEA Chanboribo advocated for streamlined visa procedures for Cambodian citizens, noting that Bulgarian travellers already benefit from visa-on-arrival and e-visa facilities. He suggested that improved accessibility would encourage more Cambodians to visit Bulgaria and the Balkan region.
Ambassador Todorov welcomed the proposal, referencing a successful visa facilitation model implemented by the Bulgarian Embassy in Hanoi for Philippine nationals, which could serve as a template for Cambodia. Both envoys agreed to pursue the initiative, recognising tourism as a vital channel for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
Reflecting on his recent visit to Cambodia to present his credentials to His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, Ambassador Todorov shared insights from his engagements with Cambodian National Assembly, government institutions, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts.
He also met with representatives from the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce and local businesses. He encouraged his Cambodian counterpart to engage with the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce to foster institutional ties.
Additionally, Ambassador Todorov expressed appreciation for the enduring ties between Cambodian alumni of Bulgarian universities and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing bilateral relations. He endorsed the idea of a student exchange memorandum, emphasising the shared value both nations place on education.
The meeting also touched upon the Cambodian-Thai border dispute, with Ambassador CHEA Chanboribo reiterating Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful resolution.
In closing, both ambassadors reaffirmed their dedication to deepening Cambodia-Bulgaria relations, fostering progress, and strengthening friendship between the two nations.
