Phnom penh: Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) and Canada have discussed the progress and achievements in Cambodia’s mine action sector, with focus on the implementation of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (Ottawa Treaty).
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the discussion took place at the CMAC headquarters in Phnom Penh between H.E. Heng Ratana, Director General of CMAC, and H.E. Christian DesRoches, Ambassador of Canada to Cambodia. The meeting centered on evaluating the advancements made in clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance in Cambodia, a critical issue impacting the safety and livelihoods of its citizens.
During their talks, both parties also exchanged views regarding the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border, particularly concerning the impact of recent border conflicts on civilian populations. This conversation underscored the broader implications of mine action beyond the immediate removal of explosive hazards.
H.E. Heng Ratana emphasized Cambodia’s ongoing dedication to humanitarian demining. He reiterated the nation’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations under the Ottawa Treaty by 2030, highlighting the importance of international cooperation and support in achieving this goal.
