Cambodian PM Calls for Youth and Elderly Solidarity for National Development

Phnom Penh:Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has highlighted the necessity for cooperation between young people and older persons to achieve national development, stability, well-being, and peace.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Prime Minister's remarks were made in a message issued for the 2026 Cambodian and International Day of Older Persons, observed on October 1. The theme for this year's observance is 'The Young Have Strength and Know the Way, the Elderly Have Experience,' which aims to underscore the value of older persons and promote shared responsibility for a prosperous society.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of gratitude and respect towards older persons and reaffirmed the Royal Government's dedication to enhancing social protection and healthcare systems for all ages. He noted the efforts of successive Royal Governments, including the current one, in improving education and vocational training. These initiatives include providing skills training for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, aligned with national education and employment policies.

The National Ageing Policy 2017-2030 also stresses the need to prepare youth for old age, reflecting the government's commitment to investing in young people as future productive members of society. The annual observance of the Cambodian and International Day of Older Persons aligns with both Cambodian policies and a United Nations resolution.

On this occasion, Hun Manet expressed appreciation to citizens for their respect and gratitude towards older persons and urged for greater awareness among younger generations about their value. He remarked on the necessity of education in morality and virtue for sustainable development, warning that declines in these areas can lead to societal crises.

Cambodia's rich traditions and cultural heritage have been preserved through the dedication and teachings of past generations, including monarchs, citizens, civil servants, and various professionals. These contributions have shaped the nation's current achievements and legacy.
