Cambodia Urges Thailand to Respond on Border Survey Talks

Phnom penh: The State Secretariat of Border Affairs (SSBA) announced on Jan. 31 that Thailand has yet to officially respond to Cambodia's request to convene a special meeting of the Cambodian-Thai Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) and to resume joint border survey work.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Cambodia has not received a reply to its note verbale dated Jan. 13, 2026, which sought to deploy Joint Survey Teams (JSTs) to continue surveying and placing temporary markers along boundary segments between pillars 42-47 and 52-59, as well as to restore 15 agreed boundary pillars, in line with agreements reached at the Special JBC Meeting in Chanthaburi in October 2025.

To expedite progress, Cambodia sent a further note verbale on Jan. 29 proposing the resumption of fieldwork between Feb. 9 and 13, 2026, and suggesting the convening of the 12th Operational Group meeting and the 5th Joint Technical Sub-Commission meeting in the second week of February.

The Cambodian side also strongly protested actions by Thai military forces that allegedly cleared and destroyed homes and properties of Cambodian citizens in border areas, describing such actions as violations of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding and the December 2025 Joint Statement of the General Border Committee.

Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the international boundary in accordance with international law and existing treaties, stressing it will not recognise any boundary changes resulting from the use of force, and called on the public to place trust in the Royal Government's efforts to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
