Cambodia Joins Global Pledge to Keep Strategic Waterways Open and Toll-Free

Phnom Penh:Cambodia has formally joined over 60 countries, including all European Union Member States, in signing the international "No Fees, No Tolls" pledge. This agreement highlights a collective commitment to maintaining the freedom of navigation across vital maritime routes.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the initiative was announced by European Union High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas and reaffirms the global dedication to freedom of navigation principles. It opposes the implementation of new tolls or fees in international waterways.

The European Union has been actively gathering global support for this initiative, including discussions at the UN General Assembly in September. Cambodia's endorsement of the pledge underscores its active role in preserving open and fair maritime trade routes, crucial for global trade, energy, and food security.

EU Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Igor Driesmans, welcomed Cambodia's participation, emphasizing the shared commitment to multilateralism and international law. The pledge aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, advocating for free passage through international waters without discriminatory restrictions.
