Cambodia Expresses Grave Concern over Rising Xenophobic and Racist Violence against Cambodians in Thailand

Geneva: Ambassador Dara In, Permanent Representative of Cambodia to the United Nations in Geneva, has voiced grave concern over the growing acts of xenophobia and violence against Cambodian nationals in Thailand.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Ambassador Dara In highlighted the escalation of xenophobic and racist violence targeting Cambodian nationals in Thailand, particularly focusing on migrant workers and students. These individuals, already vulnerable due to their status, are increasingly becoming targets of hateful attacks, harassment, and discriminatory rhetoric. The ambassador emphasized that these acts not only harm the victims but also poison people-to-people relations and undermine the spirit of solidarity that is essential for multilateralism. He made these remarks during the 60th Session of the Human Rights Council held on October 2 in Geneva.

The ambassador reaffirmed Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, based on universal principles of equality, dignity, and universality. He stressed that remaining silent in the face of these worrying trends would erode these essential foundations. Furthermore, he expressed concern about disinformation campaigns that distort facts, fuel prejudice, and expose innocent communities to unjustified risks, which contradict international obligations to guarantee non-discrimination, equality before the law, and the safety and dignity of all individuals within a jurisdiction.

Ambassador Dara In urged the Human Rights Council to combat racism, xenophobia, and intolerance, emphasizing that this fight is not a political option but a legal and moral imperative. He called for increased vigilance and strengthened cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner to ensure that every human being, regardless of origin or status, can live free from fear, hatred, and discrimination.
