Phnom Penh:Cambodian citizens today commemorate the 33rd anniversary of their Constitution's promulgation, marking a significant milestone in the country's history since its establishment on September 24, 1993.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the main event took place at the Constitution Monument near the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh, celebrating the 1993 Constitution, which serves as a vital protector of the rights, freedoms, and interests of the Cambodian people.

During the ceremony, attendees emphasized the Constitution's crucial role in maintaining peace, stability, and sustainable national development. They highlighted its importance in providing a framework for the rule of law that guides the Royal Government of Cambodia in its pursuit of progress and good governance.

On this significant occasion, Acting Head of State Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, and National Assembly President Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary offered their congratulations to the nation.

Reflecting on the historical context, Samdech Techo Hun Sen recalled that the Constitution was enacted in 1993 following the Paris Peace Agreements of October 23, 1991. These agreements facilitated a comprehensive resolution to the Cambodian conflict and led to the first general elections under the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) from May 23-28.

On September 24, 1993, the Royal Decree promulgating the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia was signed by His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk, then King of Cambodia, at the Tevea Vinichay Pavilion in the Royal Palace.

Samdech Techo emphasized that all laws and decisions by state institutions must adhere strictly to the Constitution. This document enshrines the separation of powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, secures the fundamental rights of citizens, and upholds the principles of the rule of law.
