Cambodia Calls for Swift ASEAN Observer Team Formation to Monitor Ceasefire

Cambodia: Cambodia has called on Thailand to cooperate in expediting the formation of an ASEAN Observer Team, led by Malaysia, to verify and ensure the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire reached between the two countries at their Special Meeting on July 28, 2025, in Malaysia. The appeal was reiterated by H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, during a regular press briefing this morning.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, she also renewed Cambodia’s call for Thailand to respect the terms of the ceasefire agreement and uphold the spirit and consensus reached at the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting in Malaysia on Aug. 7, 2025. H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata further urged the Thai side to return the 18 Cambodian soldiers detained after the ceasefire.

‘As of today, it has been 15 days since our military personnel were unlawfully detained by Thai soldiers. Cambodia has repeatedly urged Thailand to promptly r
eturn them in accordance with international humanitarian law and in response to urgent appeals from partner countries and international organisations,’ she said.

On the general border situation, she reported that from midnight to 6:00 a.m. today, the frontline along Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces remained calm, with Cambodian forces maintaining full vigilance in carrying out their duties.
