Phnom penh: Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, welcomed H.E. Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Johari bin Abdul, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malaysia, for a courtesy call and bilateral discussions at the National Assembly Palace on August 26. This meeting took place during the Second Inter-Parliamentary Speakers' Conference (ISC-2), hosted by Cambodia from August 26 to 28.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed gratitude towards Malaysia for its role in Cambodia's peace process and national rebuilding efforts post the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements. She highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two nations, which are set to celebrate the 69th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026. Their cooperation spans various sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, energy, connectivity, and technology.
H.E. Johari expressed appreciation for the warm reception in Cambodia, likening the visit to a homecoming. He reiterated Malaysia's support for ISC-2, emphasizing the critical role of parliamentary leaders in policy development for global betterment. Both leaders underlined the significance of the ASEAN spirit and resolving regional issues through dialogue and peaceful means.
The bilateral talks also focused on expanding economic ties and cooperation in areas such as green energy, infrastructure, science, technology, and combating cybercrime. Samdech Khuon Sudary noted the positive impact of Malaysian investment in Cambodia, with over 10,000 Malaysians residing and investing in the country. Additionally, many Cambodians work and seek medical treatment in Malaysia.
The discussions underscored the importance of economic resilience, self-reliance, and international connectivity. Both parties endorsed continued cooperation in education and human-resource development, with Malaysia providing training for Cambodian officials and educational opportunities for students.
The two parliaments have maintained close cooperation through regional and international platforms. Samdech encouraged more frequent exchanges among parliamentary leaders and specialized groups. H.E. Johari stressed nurturing future leaders, encouraging youth to embrace peace and harmony, and to engage in youth parliament initiatives.
Both leaders called for sustained efforts to promote peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding, particularly among the younger generations, highlighting that nation-building and friendships take time and effort to cultivate.
