Phnom penh: Top leaders from the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) have expressed satisfaction with the current state of security, safety, and peace along the Cambodia-Laos border. They highlighted that border demarcation between the two countries has reached 86 percent completion, with the remaining 14 percent to be resolved through peaceful means.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the remarks were made by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People's Party, and Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, Secretary-General of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, during their bilateral summit at the January 7 Palace in Phnom Penh. The meeting occurred during Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith's two-day state visit to Cambodia.
During the talks, both sides reviewed cooperation within the party-to-party framework, focusing on implementing agreements from previous meetings held in Vietnam in 2025, which have continued into 2026 with tangible results. The leaders noted significant achievements in strengthening trilateral relations among the CPP, the LPRP, and the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The two leaders emphasized the potential for further expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly through enhanced exchanges among youth and future leaders, leadership visits, and capacity-building programs. These efforts aim to preserve and deepen the long-standing friendship between the two ruling parties and their countries.
H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith expressed appreciation to the CPP, the Royal Government of Cambodia, and the Cambodian people for their continued support and assistance to Laos, reflecting the close bonds between the two neighboring nations based on mutual trust and solidarity.
Both leaders agreed to encourage their respective governments to expand cooperation, especially as Cambodia and Laos mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. A series of commemorative activities, including cultural events, will be organized to celebrate this milestone.
Discussions also covered cooperation in defense, trade, and economic development, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to maintaining a peaceful, secure, and stable border. They welcomed the progress made in border demarcation, emphasizing that the Cambodia-Laos border remains a border of peace, friendship, and cooperation.
Additionally, the two parties pledged to strengthen joint efforts to combat cross-border crime and ensure lasting stability along the border. While current bilateral trade stands at approximately US$250 million, leaders from both countries acknowledged significant untapped potential and expressed their shared goal of increasing trade volume to around US$700 million in the near future.
Following the meeting, the two party leaders presided over the signing ceremony of the minutes of their summit, the 16th of its kind, and the agreement on the cooperation plan between the two parties.
