Phnom penh: Cambodia and Canada have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on media development, focusing on professional training to help local journalists navigate the digital landscape and combat the rise of "fake news."
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the commitment was made during a meeting at the Ministry of Information between Cambodian Information Minister H.E. Neth Pheaktra and Canadian Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Christian DesRoches. The discussions centred on modernising Cambodia's media sector through human resource development. H.E. Minister emphasised that the Ministry's current priority is equipping journalists with the technical skills necessary for high-quality digital content production while strictly upholding professional ethics.
"The Ministry of Information is focusing on strengthening the capacity of journalists through technical digital training and the promotion of professional codes of conduct," he stated during the meeting. Both parties highlighted the urgent need for professional journalism in an era of rapid digitalisation, noting that a well-trained press corps is essential for countering misinformation and serving the public interest.
Ambassador DesRoches expressed Canada's support for these initiatives, offering to share Canadian expertise and provide specialist resources to bolster Cambodia's training programmes. The two officials concluded the meeting by agreeing to finalise details on upcoming joint projects.
