Phnom Penh:Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has expressed concern over the increasing use of e-cigarettes, particularly among young people, and emphasized the need for stronger measures to curb their importation, distribution, and use in Cambodia.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Prime Minister addressed this issue during the 80th founding anniversary celebration of the University of Health Science in Phnom Penh. He highlighted that Cambodia has a clear public policy against e-cigarettes and does not support investment in the production or business of these products.
The Prime Minister stated that he has instructed relevant institutions, including the Council for the Development of Cambodia and the Ministry of Commerce, to reject investment proposals related to e-cigarettes or vape products. He noted that the rising popularity of vaping among young people is a significant public concern that requires effective preventive measures.
Samdech Thipadei emphasized that the focus should not only be on investment control but also on preventing the entire supply chain, from importation and distribution to consumption. He stated that the use of such products should be prohibited in Cambodia.
Additionally, he addressed the issue of cannabis, stressing that its cultivation and use need strict control to prevent widespread use among the population. The Prime Minister's call underscores the necessity for stronger cooperation among ministries and institutions to prevent the spread of e-cigarettes and other potentially harmful substances, aligning Cambodia's investment and trade policies with public health and social protection objectives.
