Phnom penh: H.E. Thor Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, welcomed a UN delegation led by UN Resident Coordinator in Cambodia, Ms. Vladanka Andreeva, and representatives from the World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) during a courtesy call on April 6.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Minister extended his congratulations to Ms. Andreeva on her new appointment and acknowledged the UN's ongoing support in areas such as disaster risk management, social protection, and climate-resilient nutrition. The meeting highlighted the strong partnership between Cambodia and the United Nations, emphasizing a mutual dedication to humanitarian initiatives and sustainable development in the region.
During the discussion, H.E. Chetha updated the delegation on the strategic priorities of the Ministry aimed at ensuring water security. These priorities include the modernization of irrigation systems, enhancement of meteorological services, and the improvement of human resource capacities. He underscored the Ministry's commitment to furthering cooperation, pointing to successful collaborative efforts such as the Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) roadmap with the WFP and the IFAD-funded Climate Adaptation and Irrigation Sustainability for Agriculture Resilience (CAISAR) project.
These projects highlight the Ministry's dedication to developing legal frameworks and infrastructure to foster a climate-resilient agricultural sector, reinforcing Cambodia's commitment to sustainable development and resilience against climate challenges.
