Phnom penh: Five Yike troupes from the provinces of Banteay Meanchey, Takeo, Kampong Speu, Kep, and Svay Rieng will vie for national recognition at the 2025 National Yike Festival later this month.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the troupes will showcase their regional talents, creativity, and cultural heritage to audiences. The event is organized by the Department of Performing Arts of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts.
The 2025 National Yike Festival is scheduled to take place from Nov. 20 to 23 at the Chaktomuk Theatre in Phnom Penh under the theme ‘Virtue and Gratitude.’ At the opening ceremony on Nov. 20, a Yike performance titled ‘Neak Ta Kleang Moeurng’ – depicting the legendary and heroic Cambodian military leader – will be presented, as noted by the Department of Performing Arts.
The national cultural event will also feature a Khmer Products and Culture Exhibition, highlighting traditional crafts and local creativity. Lakhon Yike is one of Cambodia’s most popular forms of traditional musical theatre, alongside Lakhon Bassac and Lakhon Niyeay. It combines dance, music, singing, and dramatic storytelling and is traditionally performed during festivals, religious ceremonies, and community gatherings.
