Cambodian PM Urges Caution Over El Ni±o Threats

Pursat:Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has urged relevant institutions to closely monitor the potential impacts of the El Ni±o phenomenon, following scientific warnings about increased risks in the coming six months.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, during the inauguration of National Road No. 10, which spans 198.518 kilometers in Pursat province, Hun Manet highlighted forecasts suggesting El Ni±o could lead to approximately 450,000 deaths among vulnerable populations. He emphasized the need for vigilance from both institutions and the public.

The Prime Minister also instructed relevant bodies to evaluate and enhance the country's water storage capabilities to mitigate potential challenges arising from El Ni±o.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology reported that by mid-2026, Cambodia had 1,659 water storage reservoirs nationwide, with a total maximum storage capacity of about 4 billion cubic meters. Among these, nine major reservoirs in seven provinces collectively hold around 1 billion cubic meters.
