Phnom penh: Cambodia and the Republic of Korea have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation against transnational cybercrime, building on recent successes from joint law enforcement operations. According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, on Wednesday, Cambodia's Senior Minister H.E. Santepundit Chhay Sinarith, who heads the Secretariat of the Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS), met with South Korean Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Kim Chang-yong in Phnom Penh. H.E. Chhay Sinarith praised the nearly three-decade-long diplomatic ties between the two nations, noting that security cooperation and joint efforts against cross-border tech crimes have delivered tangible results. He reaffirmed Cambodia's 'firm political will' to dismantle organised cyber fraud networks under the country's newly enacted anti-cyber fraud law. In response, Ambassador Kim expressed South Korea's appreciation for Cambodia's robust collaboration through a joint task force, calling the country's crackdowns on cyber scam operations a potenti al model for other nations facing similar threats. He also commended Cambodian authorities and the judiciary for delivering justice to a South Korean student victimised by cybercrime, noting that the severe sentencing of the perpetrators drew widespread applause from the South Korean public. Cambodia announced plans to host an upcoming international conference on combating cyber fraud, an initiative H.E. Kim Chang-yong said South Korea fully supports. Both sides agreed to intensify intelligence sharing, joint operations, and capacity-building programmes for law enforcement to keep pace with evolving digital threats.
