Cambodia Pledges Enhanced Child Protection in UN Discussions

Phnom Penh:National Assembly President Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary emphasized Cambodia's commitment to child protection during discussions with a United Nations special representative. The Royal Government of Cambodia views children as a crucial future resource for the nation, she stated.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Khuon Sudary outlined that the dedication to child welfare originated under former Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and is actively sustained by the current government under Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet. She highlighted human capital development as a top priority for the Royal Government.

During a meeting at the National Assembly, Khuon Sudary welcomed Ms. Dr. Najat Maalla M'jid, the UN's Special Representative on Violence against Children, expressing gratitude for the UN's efforts in Cambodia, particularly those aiding women and children. She reflected on Cambodia's history, noting the nation's recovery from the Khmer Rouge era and the attainment of peace in 1998 through Samdech Techo Hun Sen's Win-Win Policy. The conflict's impact on women and children, she noted, fuels Cambodia's resolve to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies.

Despite two decades of peace and progress in safeguarding women's and children's rights, Khuon Sudary acknowledged ongoing challenges. These include digital age risks and the effects of recent border conflicts on Cambodian women and children. She affirmed Cambodia's readiness to collaborate with the UN to further enhance the welfare of women and children both domestically and internationally.
