New York:Cambodia has urged renewed efforts to build trust and resolve its border dispute with Thailand. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Prak Sokhonn, addressed the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing dialogue, bilateral agreements, and international law as pathways to reconciliation.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Prak Sokhonn highlighted the recent tensions that have severely damaged trust between Cambodia and Thailand, with impacts extending beyond bilateral relations to include threats to cultural heritage and the danger of unexploded ordnance.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn stressed that geography irrevocably connects the two nations, and maintaining peace and prosperity requires rebuilding trust. He advocated for concrete commitments and adherence to agreements like the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration and the Fuxian Consensus. He specifically mentioned the Joint Statement of December 27, 2025, which addressed renouncing force, respecting boundaries, and normalizing relations.

He also called for the Joint Boundary Commission to resume its survey and demarcation work to address unresolved boundary issues and establish a recognized border in line with international law and existing treaties.

Addressing the impact on civilians, H.E. Prak Sokhonn noted that over 20,000 Cambodians remain affected by what Cambodia terms as military occupation. He cited a UN Special Rapporteur's statement supporting their right to return home and urged a halt to activities in occupied territories to demonstrate respect for international law.

Regarding the maritime dispute, Cambodia expressed concern over Thailand's unilateral termination of the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding, prompting Cambodia to initiate proceedings under UNCLOS. This move aims to protect Cambodia's maritime rights while fostering a peaceful relationship with Thailand.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn thanked the Conciliation Commission for its involvement in resolving the maritime issue, viewing it as a chance to mend differences and strengthen relations. He reiterated Cambodia's commitment to peaceful dispute resolution, underscoring the importance of sovereign equality and adherence to the UN Charter for all nations.
