Cambodia and Thailand Discuss Maritime Dispute at UNCLOS Meeting

The Hague:Cambodia has reiterated its dedication to finding a mutually beneficial resolution to its maritime dispute with Thailand. This commitment was emphasized during the second meeting of the Conciliation Commission under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), held at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn, Cambodia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led the Cambodian delegation. The Thai delegation was headed by H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs. Ms. Katrina Cooper chaired the meeting, with the Permanent Court of Arbitration serving as the Registry.

Cambodia's main goal is to secure a solution that benefits both nations and fosters regional peace and prosperity. The country aims to finalize a treaty with Thailand to establish a comprehensive maritime boundary, with assistance from the Commission, in line with international law.

Alternatively, Cambodia is open to an agreement on joint development and resource sharing while awaiting a final boundary agreement. If no agreement is reached, Cambodia has suggested that the Commission prepare a report with recommendations to guide further negotiations, in compliance with UNCLOS obligations.

The initial meeting between the two countries took place in Singapore in September 2026.
