Phnom penh: Minister of Labour and Vocational Training H.E. Heng Sour recently met with Ms. Sonya Elmer Dettelbacher, the newly appointed Deputy Director of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Cambodia, to discuss strategies and advancements in labour and vocational training.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the meeting underscored the strong partnership between Cambodia and Switzerland, emphasizing the impact of SDC-supported projects. H.E. Heng Sour expressed optimism about strengthening this cooperation under the new SDC leadership, aiming for increased effectiveness in human capital development initiatives.

The Minister highlighted the essential link between economic growth and the development of human resources. He emphasized the necessity for a skilled, competitive workforce, pointing out the role of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in reskilling workers. The focus is on empowering young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, school dropouts, and returning migrant workers.

Cambodia aims to improve TVET quality by fostering partnerships with private institutions through practical learning and apprenticeships. The country is dedicated to promoting safe skilled migration, protecting migrant workers, and aiding their reintegration. Additionally, new educational pathways are being implemented to align with students' needs and career aspirations, incorporating innovative approaches to adapt to economic changes.

Ms. Dettelbacher praised the ongoing collaboration and reaffirmed the importance of continued partnership to support Cambodia's development goals in labour and vocational training.

H.E. Heng Sour expressed confidence in the deepening partnership between Cambodia and Switzerland, based on mutual trust and a shared commitment to sustainable development, ultimately benefiting Cambodian workers and contributing to national priorities.
