On 4 March 2022, His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, had a meeting with Her Excellency Yang Yanyi, Special Representative of His Excellency Wang Yi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China.

The Deputy PM and the Special Representative exchanged views and noted with satisfaction the growing relations between the two countries within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation and the building of a Community of Shared Future. Deputy PM PRAK Sokhonn congratulated China for successfully hosting the Winter Olympic Game in Beijing in 2022 while Her Excellency Yang Yanyi conveyed the Chinese leaders’ appreciation for the attendance of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia in its opening ceremony on 4 February 2022.

His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn expressed gratitude to China for continuously providing assistance to support the socio-economic development in Cambodia as well as Cambodia’s efforts in fighting Covid-19 Pandemic. He expressed hope to see the resumption of the direct flights between the two countries for the interests of tourism and business cooperation. Her Excellency Yang Yanyi reaffirmed China’s commitment to further strengthen and broaden cooperation with Cambodia in all fields.

In terms of regional and global issues, the Deputy PM and the Special Representative reaffirmed commitment to further promote cooperation between both nations as well as between ASEAN-China for the sake of peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and beyond. They also highly valued the development of ASEAN-China partnership over the past 30 years and expressed satisfaction with the successful holding last year of ASEAN-China Special Summit to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, particularly the elevation of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn informed the delegation about the reasons leading to the Cambodian government’s decision to join the co-sponsoring of the Resolution of the Emergency Special Session of the UNGA on the situation in Ukraine.

Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn briefed the delegation on his planned first visit to Myanmar as the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair scheduled later this month. He stressed that the visit will be aimed at pushing for the implementation of the 5 Point-Consensus, especially to end violence; to create favorable conditions for the delivery of humanitarian assistance by arranging the holding of the Consultative Meeting on Humanitarian Relief; and to establish an environment conducive to the political dialogue among all parties concerned leading to national reconciliation. Her Excellency Yang Yanyi highly appreciated Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen’s efforts as the ASEAN Chair in making progress on the implementation of the five-point consensus through his working visit to Myanmar. She also underlined China’s full support to Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and to the mission to be carried out by His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn as Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar. She stressed that China will play a constructive role in finding a peaceful solution to Myanmar crisis.
