Outcome of Telephone Conversation between Cambodian Foreign Minister and Counselor of U.S. Department of State

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia H.E. Prak Sokhonn, had a telephone conversation with H.E. Derek Chollet, Counselor of the U.S. Department of State, on Nov. 23 to discuss bilateral and regional issues of common interests and concerns.

The following is the outcome of the conversation released this evening by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation:

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, and His Excellency Mr. Derek Chollet, Counselor of the U.S. Department of State

On 23 November 2021, His Excellency Mr. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, had a telephone conversation with His Excellency Mr. Derek Chollet, Counselor of the U.S. Department of State, to discuss bilateral and regional issues of common interests and concerns.

H.E. Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that Cambodia highly values relations with the United States, which despite some difficulties, have been on the right track and growing in many areas including trade and investment, health, agriculture, culture, demining, Peacekeeping, POW/MIA, repatriation, and Peace Corps Volunteers. In thanking the United States for providing assistances to Cambodia in various fields, he expressed hope to see more constructive engagement and closer cooperation between the two countries, thereby enhancing mutual confidence. Both sides committed to further promote friendly ties and expand cooperation in all potential sectors.

On Cambodia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2022, H.E. Prak Sokhonn apprised H.E. Chollet of the priorities that Cambodia set for next year and the challenges that need to be carefully addressed in order to strengthen ASEAN centrality and resilience, advance ASEAN Community building efforts and maintain peace, stability and security within and beyond the Southeast Asian region.  He expressed appreciation for the United States’ commitment to support ASEAN centrality and the success of Cambodia’s role as the Chair of ASEAN.

H.E. Deputy Prime Minister and H.E. Counselor Chollet also exchanged views on regional and international development, including geopolitical competition, the situation in the Korean Peninsula, Myanmar etc…
