According to UNESCO, World Press Freedom Day is commemorated around the world to serve as a call for a collective effort from relevant stakeholders to explore issues facing press freedom and journalists. It also serves as a call to develop concrete solutions to address the threats posed by increased surveillance to press freedom and privacy.

The event will promote and raise public awareness of the important role of journalists in society, and in cherishing information as a public good, as well as exploring what can be done in the production, distribution, and reception of content to strengthen journalism and advance transparency.

In Cambodia, this year’s World Press Freedom Day will enhance solidarity and reunite every stakeholder to discuss and address the current challenges facing journalists and press freedom in the country.

World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991.
