Mandatory Mask Wearing Lifted in Four Northern Provinces

People in the provinces of Rattanakiri, Mondulkiri, Stung Treng and Preah Vihear are not required to wear mask anymore, announced Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen in a voice message shared this evening.

“Today, after consulting with deputy prime ministers, minister of health and other concerned parties, I on behalf of the Royal Government would like to announce that the individuals in the provinces of Rattanakiri, Mondulkiri, Stung Treng and Preah Vihear can make their own decision whether or not to wear mask, i.e. mask wearing is no longer required [in the four provinces],” said the Premier.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen specified that those from other areas who visit the four provinces are not obliged to wear mask, but if they go to other provinces beside the four, the mask wearing remains mandatory.

“This is not to use human lives to test, but we want to know how strong the community immunity and resilience [against the COVID-19 pandemic] in the capital and provinces,” he underlined.

The lifting of mandatory mask wearing in the above-said provinces comes into effect from now on, he added.

The Prime Minister also reminded all authorities, especially those of the four provinces, to follow closely the situation and to be ready for rapid tests, and appealed to the public to conduct the test immediately if they have suspected symptoms.

As of April 9, 2022, 92.78 percent of the total population of 16 million in Cambodia have been inoculated against the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the strong herd immunity, the Kingdom has fully reopened since November 2021 while continuing to adhere to the health safety rules. For more than a week, not more than 35 new cases were detected a day.
