Legal Actions Taken against Baseless Analyses Are Not Threats, Ministry of Justice Explains

Legal actions taken against analysts who made an analysis with baseless and no scientific data are not threats; it is the implementation of the rule of law, a senior official at the Ministry of Justice said.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the ministry’s Secretary of State and Spokesperson H.E Chin Malin explained that analyses without research and scientific data support are not the freedom of expression.

The comments were made in reply to some civil society organisations who have accused the Royal Government of threatening analysts.

“Analysis without professional and scientific research could face legal actions if it affects and violates the rights, freedoms and dignity of others and causes social unrest and public order,” he said.

“The law enforcement on this offence is not a threat to analysts, and the analyses that violate the law are not the exercise of the freedom of expression in a democratic society,” he stressed.

H.E. Chin Malin continued that analysis, considered a freedom of expression and protected by law, is a professional analysis, meaning that it is a scientific analysis with a clear research methodology based on theoretical aspects, general principles, interviews and real practices, etc.

Some analyses in Cambodia that their group branded and referred to as independent analyses for criticising the government were not professional and scientific analyses, but analyses based on emotions including love, hate and resentment, along with political tendencies and so on, he said.
