Khmer Traditional New Year to Begin on Thursday

The Cambodian people will celebrate this week, from April 14 to 16, their traditional New Year, one of the biggest festivals in the country.

On April 14 at 10:00 am, the year of Tiger will begin. The New Year’s angel is Kiriney Devy, the fifth daughter of Kabel Moha Prum.

Cambodia’s traditional New Year, “Chaul Chhnam Thmei” generally falls in around mid-April or the Chet, the fifth month of the Cambodian lunar calendar during which peasants are relieved of their farm work after the dry-season rice harvest.

Generally, people return to their homeland, go to pagoda, travel to different tourism destinations, and join various entertainment activities.

Thanks to high COVID-19 vaccination rate and low new infections, the Royal Government has decided to resume the New Year celebrations this year, after being postponed for two consecutive years.
