Indonesia Speaks Highly of Cambodia’s Effort in Myanmar Crisis

President of the Republic of Indonesia H.E. Joko Widodo has lauded the effort of Cambodia in making conductive environment for negotiation on Myanmar issue.

During his telephone conversation with Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia this morning, H.E. Joko Widodo appreciated the Cambodian Premier’s peace mission to Myanmar in an attempt to break the deadlock, and shared the same idea over the necessary participation of all parties concerned to find solution to the crisis, according to H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to the Cambodian Prime Minister.

H.E. Joko Widodo laid stress on the importance of implementation of the Five-Point Consensus agreed by the ASEAN leaders in April last year and expressed his support for the role of special envoy of the ASEAN Chair.

For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen recalled his recent visit to Myanmar, stressing that he went there “to plant tree, not to cut off tree”. “We cannot plant a tree and expected to have fruits and flowers in the next few days,” he explained.

The Prime Minister raised about the main purposes of his recent visit to Myanmar – ceasefire, humanitarian assistance, and opening way for the special envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar to do his work – as well as about the two implementing mechanisms, i.e. the ASEAN Troika and humanitarian assistance provision.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen and H.E. Joko Widodo agreed that the ASEAN foreign ministers should meet to discuss and push some initiatives on the Myanmar crisis.

This is the second telephone conversation between both leaders this month. The first one was on Jan. 4, 2022, during which the Indonesian president reaffirmed his support for Cambodia’s chairmanship of ASEAN this year.

Cambodia attaches great importance to ASEAN unity and centrality, and ASEAN Five-Point Consensus as well as upholding the ASEAN-10.

As the ASEAN Chair, Cambodia continued proposing more initiatives to achieve peace and further development in Myanmar.
