Concrete Evidence to Unload Charges Against Convicted Opposition Activists Welcomed

Ministry of Justice has issued justification for mass conviction of opposition activists, including Ms. Seng Chan Theary, and urged those not happy with it to bring concrete support evidence for legal counter hearing for further legal proceeding.

The statement made by the ministry’s spokesperson was circulated on June 17.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court on June 14 sentenced Ms. Seng Chan Theary and other 42 opposition activists to serve terms of imprisonment for plotting and fomenting insecurity in society.

The statement provided specific details of the convictions along with respective violation as well as illegal implication with the laws of Cambodia.

It wrote that Ms. Seng Chan Theary and other activists of Supreme Court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) supported the convicted and exiled opposition leader Mr. Sam Rainsy’s attempt to return to Cambodia on Nov. 9, 2019 to plot the overthrow of elected and legitimate government of Cambodia.

Despite the serious crime that could possibly lead to social chaos, the Ministry of Justice is open for concrete evidence for legal proceeding that may be able to unload the charges against the convicts.
