The Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace (CICP) has expressed its unreserved support and deepest gratitude to Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia for the exceptional leadership role he has played during this unprecedented community outbreak of Covid-19 which has ravaged the Kingdom since February of this year.
“We would like to salute the Royal Government of Cambodia’s recent statement to lift the lockdown of Phnom Penh and Takhmao Cities, except in areas where Covid-19 continues to have a high impact. We believe that this decision directly supports the best interests of Cambodia and Cambodians at all levels and depicts the Prime Minister’s continued, strong, devoted efforts to ensure the achievements of Cambodia’s national interest at both the domestic and international levels in stamping out this dreadful pandemic,” it underlined.
Since the beginning of the current community spread event, it added, the Royal Government under the Prime Minister’s direct leadership and guidance, has worked actively and with devotion to mobilise all state resources – despite the Kingdom’s relatively limited capacity – to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. While the challenges have been vast and the Kingdom has seen the tragic deaths of many of its citizens; the reality is that without the swift actions taken, the situation today could be far worse – possibly bordering on the catastrophic. At the same time, the Prime Minister has wisely recognised the vital role that everyone in Cambodia must play – taking personal responsibility and utilising their own agency – in order to bring this crisis to a quick end.
Furthermore, CICP believed it is particularly essential to recognise the remarkable speed and successes of the vaccination rollout campaign.
As Cambodia’s oldest foreign affairs think tank, CICP feel it is important to point out two of the most important successes of the Prime Minister’s leadership during this period of national crisis: (i) the acquisition of vaccines in a highly competitive global market in order to rapidly bring about an end to this crisis (with an estimated two million doses already have been administered) and (ii) the fact that Cambodia is near the top of the league table in ASEAN (ranked second, after only Singapore, according to currently available data) in the percentage of the population that have received at least one dose of the vaccine. This is a truly remarkable state of affairs for a country at Cambodia’s current level of development.
“In conclusion, we would like to take this opportunity to recognise the indispensable role Samdech Prime Minister has assumed to safeguard the wellbeing of all citizens in Cambodia against the deadly coronavirus. We wish to call on all Cambodians to heed Samdech Prime Minister’s valuable advice in making extra efforts to take care of themselves in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s guidance and measures, as well as to voluntarily vaccinate in order to demonstrate that Cambodia is resolutely joining other countries to combat the current pandemic,” said CICP.
