Cambodian Ruling Party President Calls for Unity against Covid-19

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has appealed to all political parties around the world to unite against the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the Leaders’ Summit between the CPC and World Political Parties held on July 6 via Videoconference under the theme “For the People’s Wellbeing: Responsibility of Political Parties”, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, also Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, said the outbreak of Covid-19 is a historic event that requires all countries as well as political parties around the world to unite as one for the cause of humanity.

In this spirit, Samdech Techo Hun Sen shared some views on the role of political parties in responding to this global crisis for the purpose of promoting the happiness, prosperity and well-being of the people.

The CPP president called on them to uphold the lives and interests of the people and international solidarity and cooperation with strict respect for the sovereignty and independence of each nation. In this sense, all political parties, regardless of tendency, must prioritise the interests of the nation and the people, never compromising with the short-term political agenda of ruthless struggle for power without regards for peace, stability, national sovereignty and the well-being of the people. In these extremely challenging circumstances, political parties should take high responsibility for the nation and its people, stop the culture and behavior of jealousy, wariness, and baseless accusations and criticism, and replace with constructive attitude and the spirit of cooperation in solving the challenges of humanity and the people, both within the global framework as well as within individual country.

At the same time, Samdech Techo Hun Sen asked them to unite to save human lives by successfully fighting against Covid-19. A key to this objective is the sharing of vaccines and recognising vaccines as a public good, by adhering to the principles of “Vaccine Multilateralism” in the process of production, distribution and consumption.

“In this regard, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for its vigorous support for Cambodia through the provision of assistances, both technical and material, and especially the generous support in the form of Covid-19 vaccines, as well as facilitating and prioritising Cambodia for all vaccine orders in the spirit of unconditional friendship and solidarity, as a slogan says: “A friend in need is a friend indeed,” he said.

Besides, he added, consideration surrounding socio-economic recovery is an indispensable task, as the Covid-19 crisis subsides in the near future.

“This will require the promotion of various bilateral and multilateral mechanisms, such as the Belt and Road Initiative, which is a crucial win-win development strategy for socio-economic development and prosperity of countries in the region and around the world through promoting trade and investment. Taking this opportunity, I strongly wish to voice my support again for the “Belt and Road Initiative” which will bring prosperity and happiness to the people in the countries and regions under the scope of this initiative, in the context of socio-economic recovery after the Covid-19 crisis subsides,” stressed Samdech Techo Hun Sen.
