“Humanitarian assistance should bear no color. All stakeholders, including external parties, should keep aside political differences and mobilise ourselves under humanitarian umbrella to gradually improve situation on the ground,” said H.E. Prak Sokhonn, the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair.

Any part of Myanmar is important, and what is most important is that the first step needs to be taken, underlined H.E. Prak Sokhonn, also Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, at the handover ceremony of Chinese Government’s contribution of COVID-19 Vaccines to ASEAN for Myanmar in Yangon.

H.E. Ekkaphab PHANTHAVONG, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC), who represented H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi , the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Coordinator (SG-AHAC), and H.E. CHEN Hai, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar, also attended the handover ceremony, as part of the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus adopted at the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on April 24, 2021.

According to a press release, the two million doses of vaccines will be administered to the people in Myanmar, particularly in the hard-to-reach area under the 50:50 mechanism of the Joint MOH-Partners Vaccination Framework, which was initiated by Cambodia and was adopted at the Consultative Meeting on ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance to Myanmar on May 6, 2022 in Phnom Penh. Details of vaccines delivery and administration will be worked out in due course by the AHA Centre, ASEAN Secretariat, Ministry of Health of Myanmar, China and relevant partners in an impartial manner and with an ultimate goal to leave no one behind in Myanmar, according to the a press release received here.

The handover ceremony is the testimony of ASEAN’s collective commitment to implement the Five-Point Consensus with support from Dialogue Partners, such as China, and other relevant external parties to promote ASEAN centrality in addressing regional issues of common concern.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn is on his five-day second visit in Myanmar in his efforts to help end the conflict in Myanmar.
